Moltres vs Gyarados: Who Wins?

As one of Kanto's Legendary birds, Moltres commands respect with its sky-high Special Attack. Its Fire/Flying typing gives it access to powerful Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB) moves like Flamethrower, Fire Blast, and Hurricane, which can inflict massive damage on opponents that don't resist them. Its signature move, Burning Jealousy, can punish foes that have boosted their stats. However, this typing also leaves it incredibly vulnerable. While it resists many types, it suffers from a critical 4x weakness to Rock-type moves and a standard weakness to Water, which is Gyarados's specialty.

Evolving from the meek Magikarp, Gyarados is a physical powerhouse known for its fearsome Attack stat and intimidating presence. Its Water/Flying typing grants it STAB on powerful moves like Waterfall and Bounce. More importantly, Gyarados can learn Rock-type moves such as Stone Edge or Rock Slide through TMs, which are catastrophic for Moltres. While Moltres's special moves are a threat, Gyarados's respectable Special Defense can help it endure a hit before retaliating. Its main fear is its own 4x weakness to Electric-type attacks, a move type Moltres can sometimes learn, potentially turning the tables in an unexpected way.
